Avi Sic

January 12, 2015

Avi Sic is a driving force in today’s club scene. Her versatile and eclectic skills have gained her the attention and respect of the DJ game’s top talent. A former KISS FM radio DJ — Avi has a true passion for her craft, a knack for making all genres flow seamlessly together, and a respect for the turntables. An event regular, she has opened for and played alongside many critically acclaimed talents including Calvin Harris, The Wanted, Icona Pop, Jason Derulo, Lil’ Kim, Public Enemy, Three Six Mafia, Bone Thugs & Harmony, Z-Trip, RJD2, and more. Aside from nightlife, Avi plays regularly during high profile fashion and media events. She also tours with her DJ/Drum group TRBLMKRS.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do. I DJ, I travel, I don’t sleep much, I order way too much Grub Hub, and I make music to impress my cats.

How has living in Chicago affected your music? This is the birthplace of house music. The local scene takes that very seriously; however, it’s not mainstream here at all. It has been overwhelming seeing different genres and talents come and go so fast. For me, it forces me to stay relevant, understand the politics of this business, and hustle hard everyday.

What kinds of things are influencing your music right now? The resurgence of mainstream hip hop and r&b right now is great. Also this future bass style is so interesting to me.

What are some recent, upcoming or current projects you are working on? Just released my second revision with US Redbull3style champion Trentino. Expect more to come.

If you were a drink, what drink would you be? A strong one.

How did your interest in music begin? When I was a kid I would make my friends play band instead of house. So, quite sometime ago.

What other musicians/bands are you interested in right now? Chris Malinchak, French Express, Pillow Talk, Perseus, Duke Dumont, Jonas Rathsman, Goldroom, Djemba Djemba, Lido, Louis The Child, Snakehips, Wave Racer, Nadus, Alison Wonderland, A-Trak and so many more are killing the production scene. Vocally speaking — I enjoy listening to Banks, Sir Sly, Broods, James Bay, Figgy and similar artists. Also the OWSLA label is super hot right now.

Who would you ideally like to collaborate with? Madonna-—no question.

What do you want a viewer to walk away with after hearing your music? Feelings.

What’s your absolute favorite place in the city/the world to be? By the ocean. I love to travel.

Most embarrassing moment on stage? Falling down drunk.

What were you like in high school? Horrible.

Can you share one of the best or worst reactions you have gotten as a result of your music? I was contacted by a high school student who wrote me a fan letter. He stated I was his DJ hero and he wanted to interview me for a class project. That was amazing, we are friends now.
