Anamanaguchi

March 17, 2015

Anamanaguchi is an electronic music group based in New York City. Members include Ary Warnaar, Peter Berkman, James DeVito and Luke Silas.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do. hiiii, I’m Ary!!! I’m in anamanaguchi ~~~ I/we do music stufff.

What are some recent, upcoming or current projects you are working on? Welllll, the last thing we put out is “Pop It

We’re currently working on a new album titled [USA]. We’re kinda going through some funny growing pains with this album. We’re much more capable producers than when we started — we can do a lot of stuff well now, but a lot of people only want us to do one thing…

We recently got inducted into this group of creative individuals, which is sponsored by a larger corporation titled “NHX”. We’ve started and joined multiple audio/video/web projects over there that will be pretty crazy.

What’s on your Netflix queue? You can catch me over on Hulu re-watching all of Initial D ;)

How did your interest in music begin? It’s the family trade! My parents met touring in orchestras… my dad got into film music a bit before I was born, so I spent a lot of time growing up in studios. Me #tbt

I would play around writing lil tracks on my dad’s computer, using early versions of Digital Performer. Just lil MIDI jams. If he was using his computer, i’d mess around on his DX-7. I must’ve been annoying lol. I also picked up the guitar cuz i thought nirvana was tight (my AIM sn was/is cobainisgod213). After I learned a few nirvana songs I got a lil more serious w/ it lol.

How has living in New York affected your music? NYC has more food options than other cities — so when I’m working on a track and take a lunch break, I have more options. Which is influentially HUGE for me.

If you had to explain your music to a stranger, what would you say? emo swag party.

What other musicians are influencing your work right now? idk I’m kinda ODing on everything… so much good stuff on soundcloud, but the communities are also kinda incestuous. Last couple days I’ve been listening to all the stuff that ends in -core lol. jcore, speedcore, breakcore, grindcore/// palette cleansers ;)

Do you get fan mail? What’s been the most exciting thing you have received from a fan? Yeah!! it ranges from awesome gifts (like haribo candy, cool stickers, customized game boys) to sexually invasive questions lol. The other day I got a message on Tumblr from a user named “arysmoustache” saying “never share me or I’ll come back to haunt you”…………….ppl r weird lol.

What was the last show you went to that stuck out to you? I definitely go to way too many shows for this question haha. Saw DOSS at china chalet the other day which was amazingggggg. LISTEN TO DOSS!

What is your beverage of choice when recording? My three drinks are iced latté, grapefruit perrier, and 24oz Coors (not light, ew.)

What do you do when you’re not working on music? Idk, I don’t really have any routines. I like to be outside a lot, lurking around the city/// we broke into a construction site the other night during a snow blizzard and climbed around on bulldozers n stuff. I like ikea meatballs.

What are you really excited about right now? Excited to travel a bit next month. Just got a ticket that’s NYC>HONG KONG>THAILAND>TOKYO>MIAMI !! Excited to see new places, go back to familiar places, meet new ppl, etc

If you hadn’t become a musician, what do you think you’d be doing? I’d race cars. I have a deep love for cars and (certain) car cultures. Also, I was apparently quite a talented lil driver. I would race go-karts in Canada (cuz they let you drive the fast ones there w/ out a driver’s license), and I clocked some pretty impressive times for a tween. I’ll always love driving, but I missed my prime. You have to combine talent w/ a certain recklessness that only happens during a certain age window. I’m too responsible and conscious now to be an impressive driver.

What are you listening to right now? Fatima Al Qadiri – Ghost Raid
